Path uploads your entire iPhone address book to its servers 8 Feb 2012 – Singapore It all started innocently enough. I was thinking of implementing a Path Mac OS X app as part of our regularly scheduled hackathon. Using the awesome mitmproxy tool which was featured on the front page of the Hacker News yesterday, I started to observe the various API calls made to Path’s servers from the iPhone app. It all seemed harmless enough until I observed a POST request to https://api.path.com/3/contacts/a... show all text

Back in December when we were working on Popcorn Maker v0.1, we were trying to integrate a template by Brian Chirls that implemented chroma-keying. Chroma keying is a process where you film a video with a pure color (usually blue or green) backdrop, and then in post production, replace it with other content. This is used in movies to film dangerous or impossible scenes, and in the weather forecasts to display the weather behind the newscaster. Tech writer MG Siegler just noted a remarkable fact: Apple's iPhone business alone is now bigger than Microsoft. Not Windows. Not Office. Microsoft. Think about that. The iPhone did not exist five years ago. And now it's bigger than a company that, 15 years ago, was dragged into court and threatened with forcible break-up because it had amassed an unassailable and unthinkably profitable monopoly. The iPhone also appears to be considerably more profitable than Microsoft. In the December quarter,... show all text

Firefox 11 contains the first Firefox implementation of the SPDY protocol. SPDY is a secure web transport protocol that encapsulates HTTP/1 while replacing its aging connection management strategies. This results in more responsive page loads today and enables better scalability with the real time web of tomorrow. The most important goal of SPDY is to transport web content using fewer TCP connections. It does this by multiplexing large numbers of transactions onto one TLS connection. Firefox for Windows, Mac and Linux adds powerful built-in developer tools and delivers smoother updates by making add-ons compatible by default. Firefox adds a number of new built-in developer tools that let developers change the look and feel of websites in real-time. <![CDATA[Letters of Note: To My Old Master]]> Tue, 31 Jan 2012 06:53:32 -0800 lettersofnote.com - Shaun Usher
In August of 1865, a Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, wrote to his former slave, Jourdan Anderson, and requested that he come back to work on his farm. Jourdan — who, since being emancipated, had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family — responded spectacularly by way of the letter seen below (a letter which, according to newspapers at the time, he dictated). Rather than quote the numerous highlights in this letter, I'll simply leave you to enjoy it. Do... show all text

The chief executive of one of the fastest-growing startups on the internet says he lied about his age and experience to woo clients David Karp, the founder of the blogging platform Tumblr, was 17 when he decided to cut the apron strings and move to Tokyo. With a smattering of Japanese and a sharp eye for computer code, the impatient Manhattan teenager embarked on a period of self-discovery. Twitter’s announcement this week that it was going to enable country-specific censorship of posts is arousing fury around the Internet. Commentators, activists, protesters and netizens have said it’s “very bad news” and claim to be “#outraged”. Bianca Jagger, for one, asked how to go about boycotting Twitter, on Twitter, according to the New York Times. (Step one might be… well, never mind.) The critics have settled on #TwitterBlackout: all day on Saturday the 28th, they promised to not tweet, ... show all text

<![CDATA[Hollywood Edition - Aaron Klein]]> Sun, 29 Jan 2012 17:20:16 -0800 aaronklein.com - Aaron Klein
Hollywood is really mad at the technology industry for killing SOPA, their bill to equip the US government with China and Iran-like powers to take down web sites suspected of “assisting” piracy, without any due process. From their rhetoric, it’s clear that Hollywood still hasn’t learned anything from this. And then it struck me…why don’t we teach them? Since they’re so persnickety about licensing agreements, let’s amend all of our terms of use to require all movie moguls to use a special “Holly... show all text
