For many curious folks, their impassioned yearning to soak up as much of the world’s wonders as possible completely transcends the boundaries of a traditional classroom. Armed with an insatiable lust for knowledge, they set out to acquire it on their own terms, although a few pointers obviously can’t hurt before departure and landing! Ever since I discovered it last July, I've been promoting using A Cleaner Internet as a way to remove from YouTube unwanted "related" videos and advertisements. The only problem was that it required users to install the extension on Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. That left out anyone working in a school that doesn't allow them to install extensions and anyone forced to use Internet Explorer. That problem has been resolved. Next year, I will be teaching all subjects to a sixth grade ELL class. I'm really excited about it, but I thought I would also reflect on what it has been like to be in a coaching position this year. So, being a coach isn't exactly what I thought it would be. I didn't get to have the "very important talk" about hydration and sunscreen. I didn't get to blow a whistle and yell at people. Instead, I observed and I asked and I taught. The upside? When teachers succeeded, they didn't dump Gatorade ... show all text

Web startups are made out of two things: people and code. The people make the code, and the code makes the people rich. Code is like a poem; it has to follow certain structural requirements, and yet out of that structure can come art. But code is art that does something. <![CDATA[Why My Six-Year-Olds Have Digital Portfolios]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 10:33:34 +0400 kathycassidy.com - Kathy Cassidy
This article was originally posted on the Getting Smart blog. From the first week of school, the six year olds in my classroom begin to create an online presence in the form of a digital portfolio. We use a blogging platform to do this, and include artifacts that show their progress in writing, reading, math, social studies and science. I am frequently asked why I do this. Even more frequently, I can see in a colleague’s eyes that they are thinking “why”, even if they don’t verbalize their q... show all text

<![CDATA[Flipping Blooms Taxonomy | Powerful Learning Practice]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 10:33:34 +0400 plpnetwork.com - Shelley Wright
Teacher Shelley Wright is on leave from her classroom, working with teachers in a half-dozen high schools to promote inquiry and connected learning. I think the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy is wrong. Hear me out. I know this statement sounds heretical in the realms of education, but I think this is something we should rethink, especially since it is so widely taught to pre-service teachers. I agree that the taxonomy accurately classifies various types of cognitive thinking skills. It certainly ide... show all text

<![CDATA[Free Technology for Teachers: Search the Web Within Your Google Documents]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 10:33:34 +0400 freetech4teachers.com - Mr. Byrne
This afternoon I discovered a new feature in Google Documents (now a part of Google Drive) that could prove to be handy for students to use while writing research papers. Google Docs now has a search function built-in. This feature allows users to search the web without having to leave the document they're viewing. To access the new feature open the "tools" menu then select "research" while you have a document open. The search box will appear on the righthand side of your screen. See my screens... show all text

<![CDATA[Free Technology for Teachers: Google Adds Tab Synchronization for Chrome]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 07:08:57 +0400 freetech4teachers.com - Mr. Byrne
Chrome is my preferred web browser and the one that I recommend to anyone who asks. I like it because of its speed, its support for WebGL, the Chrome web apps, its synchronization of bookmarks and extensions, and now I like its ability to synchronize all of my open tabs across multiple devices. Today, Google released version 19 of Chrome. The latest update allows you to sign-in with your Google account and sync all of your open tabs across all of the devices on which you are using Chrome. <![CDATA[Are You Qualified to Build E-Learning Courses? ยป The Rapid eLearning Blog]]> Tue, 15 May 2012 22:22:04 +0400 articulate.com - tom
In a recent post I made this comment about rapid elearning tools: Rapid elearning played a role in the evolution of elearning mostly because it took course creation out of the hands of a few programmers and placed it into the hands of anyone who wanted to create a course. Someone asked if that’s a good thing to place the tools in the hands of anyone who wanted to create a course. It’s a good question. But is it the right question? Technology Should Be Easy to Use It’s a good thing when technolo... show all text
