I am no longer a part of Stack Exchange. I still have much literal and figurative stock in the success of Stack Exchange, of course, but as of March 1st I will no longer be part of the day to day operations of the company, or the Stack Exchange sites, in any way. Facebook has announced what will likely be the tech industry's biggest Initial Public Offering of stock ever. What do practitioners of feminism, a philosophy centered in the experiences of women, have to say about the political economy of the world's biggest social technology company? They've raised a number of interesting questions so far. It seems that everyone has an opinion about Facebook's stated goal of being a force for good in the world. <![CDATA[Apple's iPhone Business Alone Is Now Bigger Than All Of Microsoft]]> Sun, 5 Feb 2012 18:41:56 -0800 businessinsider.com - Henry Blodget
Tech writer MG Siegler just noted a remarkable fact: Apple's iPhone business alone is now bigger than Microsoft. Not Windows. Not Office. Microsoft. Think about that. The iPhone did not exist five years ago. And now it's bigger than a company that, 15 years ago, was dragged into court and threatened with forcible break-up because it had amassed an unassailable and unthinkably profitable monopoly. The iPhone also appears to be considerably more profitable than Microsoft. In the December quarter,... show all text

“Twitter is not a media company,” Twitter CEO Dick Costolo declared on stage at AllThingsD‘s media conference in Laguna Nigel, CA, Monday evening. The statement was surprising given Twitter’s well-publicized role as a platform for breaking news, entertainment and other communications. “You [even] sell advertising,” AllThingsD‘s Peter Kafka pointed out. “We’re in the media business, but we’re not necessarily a media company,” Costolo elaborated. “We don’t create our own content; we’re a distribu... show all text

The dribs and drabs of news about the shakeup of Twitter’s board last year has produced a confusing picture. The message I was hearing from sources while I was out on maternity leave amounted to: “Nothing to see here. Some people just decided to leave. That happens all the time. What’s the big deal?” I’m sorry, on what planet does an entire company’s investors voluntarily give up board seats on a hot, $11 billion company that’s finally getting its act together? I’m hard pressed to think of one ... show all text

Twitter’s announcement this week that it was going to enable country-specific censorship of posts is arousing fury around the Internet. Commentators, activists, protesters and netizens have said it’s “very bad news” and claim to be “#outraged”. Bianca Jagger, for one, asked how to go about boycotting Twitter, on Twitter, according to the New York Times. (Step one might be… well, never mind.) <![CDATA[Facebook Timeline Now Pushed To Everyone, Users Get A Week To Clean Up Profiles | TechCrunch]]> Wed, 25 Jan 2012 05:15:33 -0800 techcrunch.com
You can run, but you can't hide. Facebook's biggest user interface overhaul since the Wall, the Facebook Timeline, is now becoming mandatory for all users. According to the company, over the next few weeks, everyone will get the new Timeline. And here's the important part: when you do, you'll have just seven days to preview what's there now, and hide anything you don't want others to see.

It seemed like this week could finally be the week when Google didn’t make headlines for their decision to inject Google+ results right into Search. That hope lasted until Monday. Now the story is back — with a vengeance. Yes, the particular flare up was aided by a clever bookmarklet developed by Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace employees working “off the clock” (but perhaps not “off the reservation”). But the reason why this particular issue keeps coming up — and why it will keep coming up indef... show all text

Rupert, my son had a simple request. “Daddy, can we watch last week’s episode of The Simpsons?” No, son, we can’t. You can blame Rupert Murdoch for that. Rupert, I know you’re all upset about all those SOPA & PIPA protests last week. Why, without them, how will you keep all your shows from being accessible to people who just want to pirate them for free through things like Google TV. Here’s the thing. Go look in a mirror. See that guy looking back at you? Put a big dose of the blame on him. Bec... show all text
