While Google has endured criticism for biasing Google+ content in its new “Search Plus Your World” features, Bing has been surprisingly shy about pressing its social search advantage. Especially considering how much Microsoft usually likes to publicly poke Google. In fact, Bing is now the only search engine that has explicit deals to access data from both Facebook and Twitter. But it’s not like Bing is the all-social, all-the-time search engine. In fact, Bing has been oddly reticent about inco...  show all text

Earlier, I linked to this set of three pie charts by Ed Bott, but it’s worth mentioning something else about them. The subtle point that it seems Bott is trying to make is that out of Microsoft, Apple, and Google, Microsoft has the best business because it’s the most well-rounded. (Meanwhile, Google has the worst because it’s entirely dominated by one thing: advertising.) At a high-level, that’s an interesting point to make, I think. This funny little piece of email just got forwarded to me … From: “****, ***” Date: February 3, 2012 10:11:04 AM PST To: Greg Barto [@ TechCrunch] Subject: NapQuest Hey Greg It is one of our goals to get a “nap room” set-up in every location. Basically, it’s a closed room where we would put a chaise or couch, darken the windows and allow people to nap as the [sic] like. This is high on the priority list for Arianna and your office is one of the few where we don’t yet have it in place. When I vi...  show all text

For a founder of a highly touted Internet company undertaking an IPO, the “Letter to Shareholders” in the S-1 prospectus has become a rarefied form of performance art. Going public is the purest capitalist act — a deep and unambiguous genuflection to Mammon. But a founder’s letter provides an opportunity to explain that while the company is indeed tapping the rapacious forces of Wall Street to solicit investments on the open market, it’s not really about the billions of dollars set to tumble in...  show all text

Meet our new Managing Editor. His name is Joel Johnson and he’s “done many things,” from editing major sites (like Gizmodo and Kotaku) to flat-out launching others (Boing Boing Gadgets, Off World, and Consumerist). And now he’s down with us. Shit’s epic. Joel will be disinfecting himself over the next two weeks and then he’ll get started doing something. As he told me earlier, “Whatever we do, we’re going to do it very loud!” Boom. (Photo: provided by Joel Johnson)
