In today’s digital age, the world is fast evolving into a large global attention economy. Whether it’s an individual or a business, the kind of influence you have on others gains paramount importance. So, how do you determine what kind of influence you have on others? While there are services such as Klout which provide a good indication of your level of influence, it is largely based on your social media influence only. Last week, I posted a video about the 3 rules of engagement in the attenti... show all text

Each year, the WordPress core development team meets in person for a week to work together and discuss the vision for WordPress in the coming year. As annual events go, it’s easily my favorite. <![CDATA[How Yahoo Killed Flickr and Lost the Internet]]> Wed, 16 May 2012 05:48:47 +0400 gizmodo.com - Mat Honan
Web startups are made out of two things: people and code. The people make the code, and the code makes the people rich. Code is like a poem; it has to follow certain structural requirements, and yet out of that structure can come art. But code is art that does something. It is the assembly of something brand new from nothing but an idea. More »

I don't think winners beat the competition because they work harder. And it's not even clear that they win because they have more creativity. The secret, I think, is in understanding what matters. It's not obvious, and it changes. It changes by culture, by buyer, by product and even by the day of the week. But those that manage to capture the imagination, make sales and grow are doing it by perfecting the things that matter and ignoring the rest. Both parts are difficult, particularly when you ... show all text

You can’t make this stuff up, folks. Intrepid reporter (or just nosey historian) Nate St. Pierre did some digging in the grand old town of Springfield, IL where he took a tour of the Lincoln Museum and stumbled onto the “Springfield Gazette”, which was a paper entirely about Abraham Lincoln: The whole Springfield Gazette was one sheet of paper, and it was all about Lincoln. The problem is finding a vector that pays for itself as you scale. We see a problem and we think we've "solved" it, but if there isn't a scalable go-to-market business approach behind the solution, it's not going to work. This is where engineers and other problem solvers so often get stuck. Industries and organizations and systems aren't broken because no one knows how to solve their problem. At the local gym, it's not unusual to see hardcore members contorting themselves to fool the stairmaster machine into giving them good numbers. If you use your arms, you can lift yourself off the machine and trick it into thinking you're working yourself really hard. Of course, you end up with cramped shoulders and a lousy workout, but who cares, the machine said you burned 600 calories... The same thing happens with authors who put themselves and their readers through the wringer to get a spot... show all text

The Best of Instagram Series is presented by T-Mobile. Its 4G Tweet Race, a week-long campaign launching May 3, pits Twitter users against one another in a daily, frantic race for retweets. There are 7 races, and the winners of each heat win a new HTC One™ S phone with a year of T-Mobile’s Unlimited Value service, and the final winner takes home $4,000. Instagram users often get a bit of flack for oversharing their food photos. Now that the photo-sharing app is available for iOS, Android and po... show all text

Mothers with daughters adore this bestselling book by Sarah Kay. It's a little piece of magic. I published it because every time I saw the video, it made me cry. But you can't give your mom a video link for Mother's Day, can you? Check out these reviews: "Give this lovely little book to any parent in your life who is trying to instill the values of self-love, adventurousness and intelligent defiance in their children. Give this book to any parent who questions themselves all too often, even when show all text

<![CDATA[What Is It Like to Be the Most Popular Woman on YouTube? [VIDEO]]]> Sat, 5 May 2012 12:47:50 +0400 mashable.com - Mashable Video
Who is the most subscribed woman on YouTube? If you guessed Rihanna, you’d be wrong by about 800,000 followers. With nearly 3 million people following her weekly videos, Jenna Marbles has built a powerful brand around her off-beat, low-tech humor. Those are rather astonishing numbers for webcam-style videos of a woman in her bedroom talking about farts to her two dogs. It’s even more astounding when you consider that she’s been at this just over two years. But the success that Marbles has exper... show all text

<![CDATA[Seth's Blog: Reconsidering decisions]]> Sat, 5 May 2012 02:43:24 +0400 sethgodin.typepad.com - Seth Godin
There are two common mistakes here: Frequently reconsidering decisions that ought to be left alone. Once you enroll in college, it is both painful and a waste to spend the first five minutes of every morning wondering if you should drop out or not. Once you've established a marketing plan, it doesn't pay to reevaluate it every time your shop is empty. And once you've committed to a partnership, it's silly to reconsider that choice every time you have a disagreement. In addition to wasting time,... show all text

“The visionary lies to himself, the liar only to others.” – Friedrich Nietzsche Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson has lied about receiving a computer science degree. Or at any rate he’s never corrected his biographical information that includes that information, and it’s nearly impossible to believe that he simply never noticed it. The allegation was first raised by Third Point LLC, a Yahoo shareholder, in a letter to the board of directors earlier today (embedded here). Yahoo confirmed the accuracy of ... show all text
