The New Aesthetic tumblr is now closed. The New Aesthetic project was begun one year ago by James Bridle on May 6th, 2011, with a blog post at RIG London, and continued with a series of talks and discussions, online and offline. Many thanks to all of those who have participated in and contributed to the conversation so far, particularly to everyone at RIG and BERG, and to Ben Bashford, Dan Williams, Joanne McNeil, Aaron Straup Cope, Chris Heathcote, and far too many other people to mention. I first met Adam Yauch in 1982, in Brooklyn, when I was fifteen. I was sitting on the red steps in the lobby of St. Ann’s, where I was a sophomore in high school. His bandmate, Michael Diamond, was a grade ahead of me. Occasionally Mike and I would talk about records and argue. We talked about doing a newsletter, but that was also just talk. His hardcore band, the Beastie Boys, was getting bigger in the very small pond of downtown Manhattan. (In the nineteen-eighties, folks didn’t play rock mus...  show all text

Ordinarily, ProfHacker doesn’t spend a lot of time chasing down nonsense on blogs, even on other blogs published at the Chronicle. As xkcd documented so long ago, that way madness lies. And especially at this time of year, who has time for it, anyway? But sometimes, there are errors in judgment that are so massive, that so dramatically misunderstand and reinforce a self-created problem, that they have to be identified and repudiated. One of those problems happened this week at Brainstorm. We are  show all text

As graduate students in Northwestern University’s department of African-American studies, we were thrilled with the informative and important article by Stacey Patton for The Chronicle of Higher Education that looked at the state of our discipline through the lens of an important academic conference bringing together the 11 African-American studies doctoral programs together for the first time. I’ve gone on record as saying that the digital humanities is not about building. It’s about sharing. I stand by that declaration. But I’ve also been thinking about a complementary mode of learning and research that is precisely the opposite of building things. It is destroying things. I want to propose a theory and practice of a Deformed Humanities. A humanities born of broken, twisted things. And what is broken and twisted is also beautiful, and a bearer of knowledge. Below is the text from a talk I gave at the Geographies of Desire conference, held at the University of Maryland on April 27-28. Almost everything that I said there is something that I’ve said here before, so faithful readers won’t find much that’s new. But I promised I’d stick it up here, so here it is! If you’re simply looking for the set of links to the resources I mentioned, you can find those on Pinboard. I haven’t included all of my slides here, but you can find those here.
